Turns out the bus we were planning on taking from the Ludinghausen train station to the Burg Vischering castle was a TaxiBus, i.e. it runs on a schedule, but it only comes if you call for it. So we walked, which ended up being fine - it was only about a mile and a half, and some of the walk paralleled a lovely canal. This is the view as we came upon the castle grounds. The castle's chapel is the building to the right.
Katie on the bridge over the dam that regulates the water surrounding the castle.
The main castle.Impressive entryway.
These windows are made for unwelcomed guests. The holes in the stone allow you to place an arrow and aim at your target.
The castle was built in the 1200s, then burned down and rebuilt in the 1500s.
There was a restaurant in the courtyard. We arrived at the end of the day, and it started to raining a bit, so there wasn't much demand at the outdoor tables.
Katie dancing in the ballroom.
A view of the kitchen. It was across the water from the main castle. Guess they didn't want to chance any more fires in the castle.
The girls on the walk back to the Ludinghausen train station.
The pathway was lined with busts of important people from the village - knights, bishops, etc. We happened to pass another Wasserschloss on the walk - this one is Burg Ludinghausen. There was a large group of folks playing bocce ball in the park in front of the castle.
And we happened upon this zipline in front of the castle too. Great giggle inducer. Even Grace tried it.
The welcoming sight of the Ludinghausen train station. We weren't sure what we were in for when we arrived, but it turned out to be a good afternoon. Thankfully, we were all game for walking (though we do get some requests by Katie and Sam to have a ride in the stroller) so my bus snafu only led to more adventure, rather than missed opportunities.
What beautiful places you are visiting. The pictures are wonderful. I'm glad Katie is getting good use of her new dress. It is so pretty.
