Rainy Fronleichnam

Today was yet another holiday - Fronleichnam. It coincides with the celebration of Corpus Christi. So again the university was closed. We had planned to go to Bremen for the day, but it was rainy and Isaac was not feeling great, so we stayed home. Sam and I popped over to the strawberry stand across the street to get a kilo of fresh ones. We also stopped at the spargel stand and bought some for the first time. Spargel is white asparagus, a northern European treat - the season is almost over. It is wider in diameter than the usual green asparagus, and it needs to be peeled its entire length. Here's our lunch in preparation. I was advised that spargel is best boiled in salted water and paired with new potatoes.
Grace was busy reading while I was making lunch.
The final product.
It was delicious. The spargel tastes very similar to green asparagus, but it's not identical. Spargel is a bit buttery and sweeter, and Dave thinks he detects the taste of champagne.Isaac has a cold, and isn't sleeping great, poor fellow. Sam volunteered to sleep with him in his mattress. It did the trick.

We finished up the day with a walk to the ice cream shop and Dave's office during a lull in the rain. We timed it just right, keeping dry. Sam discovered slugs today. They are huge over here. I've never seen anything like them. Last night, we were watching Treasure Island (dubbed into German), and Sam was very concerned (without trying to act concerned) about whether pirates would be interested in us. We assured him that we have no treasure to speak of, and pirates don't want to steal Legos. He seemed reassured.
Since I was taking pictures of sleeping kids, I snapped the girls snoozing in their beds too.
Katie has started writing and drawing like a fiend. She is filling up notebooks left and right. Whenever Sam writes in his journal, she has to "do my homework." This switch just turned on it her. When I met with Katie's teacher, Ms. Veronica, before we left for Germany, she said Katie didn't really catch onto the idea of tracing, and hadn't started writing letters. Now Katie is loving to write with help (and she likes help from Dad most.) Her drawings are very entertaining too. It's so much fun to watch these kids change as they grow.
