Saturday evening, Santa Claus dropped off an early Christmas present. Well actually, it was Petter and Stine, with a Christmas tree they had cut for us on Stine's family farm on the other side of the fjord. It is a beautiful Norwegian spruce. They cut six trees on the farm, and brought them back over to Trondheim on the ferry.

The tree is now in our basement "acclimating." This is a new procedure to me, but Stine said the tree should be kept in the basement for about five days to give the tree a chance to adjust to the inside temperature. If we don't do it, the tree will apparently be more apt to drop needles. For now, it smells terrific while I'm down in the basement doing laundry. We'll put the tree up the day before Christmas Eve, like good Norwegians. |
It's interesting how particular Norwegians are about their trees. Dad's the same way (though he acclimatized his under the back deck this year). Years past he'd even hose the tree down (if the farmer didn't allow grass to grow underneath preventing dirt from splashing up). And it HAS to be a spruce or balsam. No long-needle sorts permitted.
